For those of you that are unaware, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is the new ride that is replacing The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This new ride will be the first Mickey-themed ride-through attraction.
It was announced last week during D23 Japan that Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is opening in 2019.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will feature a new catchy theme song created especially for the attraction as well as a new experience that defies logic that Disney is calling 2 ½-D. No glasses required.
On the attraction, the fun begins when you see the premiere of a new cartoon short with Mickey and Minnie getting ready for a picnic. As they head out, they drive alongside a train and find out that the engineer is Goofy. Then, one magical moment lets you step into the movie and on Goofy’s train for a wacky, wild ride.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will put you inside the wacky and unpredictable world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short where you’re the star and anything can happen. And for the first time, Disney shared a preview of what the cars will look like when you board the attraction for a zany, out-of-control adventure filled with surprising twists and turns.
The ride is a trackless system and will not contain any of the track or rooms from the previous attraction. Guests will board the 16-passenger train, which consists of four separate cars that hold four guests each (two rows of two), before it departs the train barn at the beginning of the attraction.
The D23 Expo 2019 finished this past weekend and on display were the Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Cast Member costumes and ride vehicle model! Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway set to open in Spring 2020 at Disney's Hollywood Studios at The Walt Disney World Resort.
Located in the Chinese Theater, which serves as the centerpiece for the park, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will take guests on a zany ride through a Mickey Mouse short. Guests will enter the Chinese Theater as if they were going to watch the world premier of a Mickey Mouse short before they themselves are thrown into the middle of the action. Guests will board a trackless ride vehicle that resembles the train from the short, and Goofy will (try) to steer them through the various scenes without causing too much mayhem in the process.
A model of that very train was on display at the 2019 D23 Expo.
This is the ride vehicle that guests will board. This is actually two different trackless vehicles that will move and function as a single train (for some of the ride, at least). By making each vehicle trackless, it allows for the two-row vehicles to break off into different sections of the ride and introduce “cartoon physics” to the ride experience.
Also on display were the Cast Member costumes for the attraction.
Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, announced earlier this month that Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open March 4, 2020 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
This will be the first Disney ride-through attraction featuring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, that will draw guests inside a Mickey cartoon for a fun-filled adventure where “Mouse rules apply” and anything can happen.

Earlier this week, Walt Disney Imagineering marked a milestone on the attraction’s progress by unveiling its dazzling new marquee.
“We want to make sure that we’re providing an amazing marquee that really celebrates the entrance into a great attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios,” said Art Director Phillip Hillis.
The marquee is brought to “light” by blinking bulbs and animated depictions of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse created with real, hand-crafted neon. It takes its design cue from the extravagant made-for-the-movie marquees that were custom designed for the premieres of epic films in the mid-20th century. It also connects to the design and glamour of the Chinese Theatre and Hollywood Boulevard, the main thoroughfare through the park.
When the attraction debuts on March 4, Disney’s Hollywood Studios guests can head to the Chinese Theatre to see the world premiere of Mickey and Minnie’s latest cartoon short entitled “Perfect Picnic.” The theater will serve as the magic portal through which theater-goers can burst directly into the cartoon world.
And did you know that Mickey and Minnie have a history at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood? The 1931 Mickey Mouse cartoon “Mickey Steps Out,” was screened at the Chinese Theatre. And the 1933 cartoon, “Mickey’s Gala Premier,” opens with an establishing shot in front of the Chinese Theatre with a blinking marquee and crisscrossing searchlights welcoming Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow to the red carpet.
With Valentine’s Day approaching, Disney released a special poster art inspired by the Mickey short “Yodelberg” in their ongoing series celebrating the March 4 debut of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
As you can see, the new “Yodelberg” poster features Mickey longing to visit Minnie at her mountain chalet. In the video short, Mickey realizes that a potential avalanche and some unexpected surprises threaten to put an end to their yodeling duet.
You’ll soon be able to experience the surprises of Mickey’s cartoon universe like never before at Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. During each adventure, you’ll enter the NEW Mickey Mouse cartoon short “Perfect Picnic” for a one-of-a-kind adventure where anything can happen. Why? Because here, mouse rules apply!
