"A long standing rumor has The Great Movie Ride attraction being replaced with a new concept. The rumored concept centers around Mickey Mouse with the attraction title being, "The Great Mickey Ride"
The attraction is expected to be inspired by Classic Mickey Mouse animated shorts and it is expected to utilize the trackless (LPS) ride system currently in use at Pooh's Hunny Hunt (Tokyo Disneyland), Mystic Manor (Hong Kong Disneyland) and Ratatouille: The Adventure (Disney Studios Paris). Conflicting information has the closing date in either 2017 or 2018 with a two year build for the replacement attraction.
In 2015, Disney partnered with Turner Classic Movies to sponsor the attraction and details of that sponsorship will be found in the timeline below. However, that contract was reported to be 5 years by the Orlando Sentinel, however it appears it may have only been for 3 years."
Well, whether you want the ride to stay or go, Disney officials have made up their minds on the subject. According to Disney Park Blog, The Great Movie Ride will be replaced with the first Mickey-themed ride-through attraction called Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway.
The attraction is inspired by the many Mickey Shorts that are showing on the Disney Channel. Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway will put the guest inside the "wacky and unpredictable world of a Mickey Mouse Cartoon Short where you’re the star and anything can happen. This zany out-of-control adventure features surprising twists and turns, dazzling visual effects and mind-boggling transformations that happen before your very eyes."
The attraction will feature a new story and a new singable theme song as well as a completely new experience.
The Great Movie Ride presented by Turner Classic Movies will close on August 13, 2017 in order to begin the transformation for the new home of Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway at the Chinese Theatre.

On July 25, 2017, the Disney Parks Blog was offering a chance for guest to walk (yes----walk not ride) through The Great Movie Ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The event was called The Great Movie Ride After-Hours Meet-Up and quickly sold out.
For this event, you would have arrived at 9:00 p.m. on Friday July 28th as the event started at 9:45 p.m. and lasted until 12:00 a.m. This is a way to guests to see their favorite ride up close and personal before it closed and became "Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway". Guests were able to walk that track of the ride, enjoy some special entertainment and have desserts in the Wizard of Oz scene.
The people at WDW News Today were nice enough to film the walkthrough. Check out the following video to see for yourself.
Like every other change over the years at Disney I will just get used to it.....but like it or not I will just miss the old stuff
Me too! I like the old stuff, especially old movies. I always loved at the end of the ride to watch the movie clips, especially my all-time favorite movie, The Adventures of Robin Hood. I am sad to see it go.

The Great Movie Ride was one of our favorite attractions. If the purpose is to replace it by a Ratatouille like attraction with Mickey, we are quite deceived. Once you have made 3 or 4 times Ratatouille, it begins to be quite boring and no great interest. At least it's less costly too manage when it works than the GMR. But i regret this choice. It's like what they put in the MK. It is called the New Fantasyland including the end of Toon Town. Apart of the BOG restaurant, this new Fantasyland has no interest. At least it's our feeling. Change for change is not a solution.
sad to see that it is now gone. When we were planning a trip after MGM opened it was the Great Movie Ride that interested us the most as a must see because our daughter Ashley loved the Wizard of Oz.
