I have read several articles that have stated that Disney's Character meals have been quietly testing a new meet and greet protocol. It looks like that Stitch took up residence outside Ohana for his meet and greet for a few weeks and several characters have maybe handed out pre-signed cards to waiting visitors. From what I understand, the characters will still honor requests (at this time) to sign books, but it could be short lived.
Has anyone experienced this yet and what are your thoughts? I personally think that if we pay that much more for a meal, signing a book and posing for a picture isn't asking a lot.....

I had read the same thing and there are mixed reviews about the new idea but many (including myself) agree with you on the point that if you pay for the character meal then signing a book isn't a lot to ask for. I think...if the kids have the books then sign them but if the kids don't have the books then pass out a pre-signed card. This way the kids without books don't feel leftout if their parents didn't buy them the books.

Our Children always enjoyed the character meals, made it much easier to meet them. We enjoy the buffets so we end up with character meals regardless, so what ever changes take place now will not affect us. It will unfortunately affect the children's good time.
We had the pleasure of meeting Stitch at Ohana this past summer. He was outside with a photopass photographer and took as many pics as you would like. Honestly it made the wait better as we had that interaction filling up the void prior to being seated. In fact we probably got more time with him than we have had at the table in the past! The biggest problem is everyone was confused -did they have to wait for him? Will he be in there walking around? Will anyone else be out here?
The rest of the characters were inside and interacting - my son felt he was too old for the autographs this visit so no comment there.

children go through this and it's best to let it go, but try talking to them and tell them you never grow up while at Disney.
Once my son had the autograph book and had no problem getting the character autograph's, we ran into Davy Crockett and my son didn't want his autograph, so I took his book and got it for him. Davy says to me "sir do you want my autograph" we had a laugh and my son was glad to have it later.

This is an interesting topic, I wonder what the problem is they are trying to solve/
Not enough character interaction? - At Character meals, I think the interaction is very good, I rarely see issues and having the character sign a book isn't a big deal . IF you are talking about meet-greets in the park, those may be an issue with the signing adding to the delay and the lines. Plus the characters need breaks due to heat etc, so discontinuing the signing is a positive there.
Interrupting the meal ? As a parent, I must say it was pretty annoying when you get your meal served or you just got back from the buffet and suddenly Goofy shows up and you have to stop and take a picture, have them sign and also enjoy the interaction. It always seemed to happen at the worst time. BUT I knoew this going in, so its expected, I never assume a character meal will be relaxing. Its the memories and photos that make the experience so good. My kids still love it and they are 18.
Getting the people done with their meals faster ? - This seems to be the main reason to me. Having to wait for a character or wait for a signing, prompts the customers to wait a little before paying the check and leaving. For example, we were at Crystal palace in June - one of my daughters wanted a picture with Eeyore , except he had not come bye yet ( he came while she was at buffet) - so we had to wait.. we took extra long with dessert waiting for him to come around. If 100 families did that during the day I could see where the time crunch could come into play.
SO my theory is that its being done to get dinner over with faster....

I didn't think of that but you might be correct. By passing out cards, you don't have wait for the characters to sign a book. In true (current) Disney fashion, see how many people they can move through dinner and therefore make more money.

It's unfortunate but it all comes down to making more money. Have you noticed that after the first dish at a buffet they take the dish before you come back with seconds, then as you get more, they are not as punctual, I've come back to the table and the dirty dishes are still there. This doesn't happen at all the buffets but it does happen.
What I do is put them on a clean table or out of the way on the floor, they get the idea I'm staying and not leaving until I'm done.

I totally agree with you, I have definitely noticed it- we were at Tusker house where I first realized it.

It's unfortunate, nice to know it isn't just us.
The first and only time we ate at Ohana's the waiter/cast member asked if we ever ate there before and we said no, so he tells us that we can eat as much as we want, he will keep coming around with food until we are full, the first 15 minutes was just like he said, then he didn't show up again for what seemed like 30 minutes. We didn't stay long because of his serving. I'm sure it was just him and not the restaurant, we have never been able to book again because it is always full.

Very logical approach doc
second star to the right and straight on till morning
I haven’t felt rushed at a Character meal, well except for one. The Ackershus Royal Banquet. I did feel a little like we were out of place without girls at the table wanting to meet the princesses. Our grandsons love the “girl in the blue dress”, and aren’t to thrilled about the rest. (Snow White freaks them out and doesn’t do my heart any good either”!)
With this being said, I understand that character meals are very popular and they feel they have to turn those tables around quickly. But, signing those books or whatever is a big deal. Have something on hand to hand a child who doesn’t have anything to sign. That is an awesome idea. But don’t do it to “cheapen/rush” the experience.

our latest Character meal was at the Crystal Palace, we complained about a terrible smell that smelled like sewage. the waitress said she would tell the manager who never showed up. there was no way they couldn't smell it, it was that bad. Even the characters didn't come around, must have been against the union rules. the place should have been shut down that day. This was the first time we went there in probably 30 years which really left a lasting impression that we will never do it again.

How awful! They really should have addressed the issue. How could you eat anything with that terrible smell. I wouldn't have lasted and would be heading for the exit.

Where we sat was out of the smell area, problem was we had to walk through that area to get the food which was also not in the smell area.
Some people were sitting in that area, I too would have left.
