Yesterday, Orlando Business Journal released an article about Disney filing a patent for a new ride. The patent was published on October 5, 2017 and is called Track-based Swing Ride with Long Arm Pendulum. The ride is a combination of a swinging pendulum ride devise attached to a moving track that will take riders through a set.
Here is how the patent describes the ride:
"One goal in designing the ride system was to deliver an experience similar to what it would feel like to be with Tarzan or a similar character swinging between trees of a jungle on a vine or with Spider-Man or a similar character swinging on webs between buildings as you move down streets of a city. [The ride is] intended to have swinging sensation provided while also having forward travel along a ride path in a direction of travel and for the swinging sensation to feel thrilling and fun."
According to the article, "Disney's patents typically never mention the theming of a ride, so the mention of Tarzan or Spider-Man in the patent may be just as examples. However, the company has been working on new ways to tie its characters with new ride experiences and it's hard not to see this patent as the precursor to a Spider-Man attraction.
"Robert Niles with Theme Park Insider suggested, via a blog post, that this could be the ride mechanic used for the new Guardians of the Galaxy ride coming to Epcot. That ride is supposed to have some roller coaster mechanic, but details are still under wraps."
If this ride is going to be based on Spider-Man, then they might be looking to add it to Disneyland in California since Disney is looking to add more Marvel-based experiences to the California resort based off of Spider-Man and the Avengers. However, you will NOT see Spider-Man in Walt Disney World due to a long-standing pre-Disney-owning-Marvel agreement the comic company had with Universal Orlando Resort, which has its own Spider-Man ride.
