It was announced today that The Walt Disney World Resort is testing a bluetooth non-MagicBand door entry system for the resort rooms. The test is being done at the Polynesian Village Resort and Grand Floridian Spa and Resort. So, instead of entering your room via MagicBand, you will instead be entering your room via your SmartPhone using the MyDisneyExperience app.

My wife read this, it won't work with us because we don't have a smartphone. LOL Can't understand why they would do this anyway. To much of a security problem.
And to think, we were opposed to the magic bands also and insisted on key cards. lol We like the Magic Bands now and it's time for an upgrade. Oh well, I will deal with what I have to and I am not buying a phone to enter my room.

There is less security problems then you think. This system has been use for over a year in a lot of high-end hotels (A Loft, Ritz, etc...) I personally think it is a great idea. Soooo many people carry SmartPhones including kids and they have that with them everywhere they go. So, why not do it? It is the way technology is going and if you don't keep up with it, it will pass you by.

How do you board a flight? Do you still print out your boarding pass??
In case you didn't know, you can go through security, check-in at the terminal and board your plane via your phone and never needing to print a boarding pass. I read somewhere mid-2107 that airlines were tried of people coming to them saying they lost their ticket. Well, with the ability to do through your phone, that is no longer an issue.

Rich, I enjoy living in the past and with that, like Jimmy said "if the phone doesn't ring, it's me".

As for the airport, we go to the counter and get the passes then check the luggage.

I didn't realize the system was already used.

I reported back in January of this year that the Walt Disney World Resort was testing a bluetooth non-MagicBand door entry system for the resort rooms. The test is being done at the Polynesian Village Resort and Grand Floridian Spa and Resort. So, instead of entering your room via MagicBand, you will instead be entering your room via your SmartPhone using the MyDisneyExperience app.
Well, Disney Parks Blog reports today that this is no longer just being tested but will be exciting new app feature: a digital key. The My Disney Experience app recently introduced features like mobile order and online check-in that are providing families and friends with additional choices to make their vacation even more enjoyable and convenient and will soon be adding a digital key feature.
Coming soon to Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, a new feature in the My Disney Experience app will allow guests to quickly unlock their hotel room using a digital key on their mobile devices, providing them with another seamless room entry option that brings added ease and flexibility to their experience.

Guests can also use their digital key to unlock the hotel entrance gate and common area doors requiring a key, which may include pools, fitness centers, elevators and club level lounges. Arriving travel parties that have checked in online may even use their digital key to bypass the need to visit the front desk, giving them the opportunity to go directly to their room when it is ready and start their vacation even faster.
The feature represents the latest evolution of keyless room entry, which they began offering with the MagicBand, the unique all-in-one device that effortlessly connects the vacation choices guests make in My Disney Experience. Guests may use either or both options to enter their room during their stay.
So how does it work? To use their digital key, guests can opt in and activate the feature on their check-in day through a brief set up process in the app. To enter their room, guests tap the “Unlock Door” button and then simply hold their phone against the door lock. Check out the video below to see a sneak peek of the feature in action.

Bluetooth®-enabled mobile devices with the latest version of the My Disney Experience app are required to take advantage of a digital key for room entry. And don’t forget to wear your MagicBand for all other uses including park entry, FastPass+ redemption, room charges and more.
It was announced over this past weekend that this new keyless entry will become available to Fort Wilderness Cabins. Originally, this MyDisneyExperience option was only available at the Wilderness Lodge and Wilderness Lodge Vacation Club Resorts. Now you are probably asking yourself, why is this only available at Fort Wilderness Cabins and not the rest of Fort Wilderness. Well.....you don’t need your smart phone to unlock your tent or RV.

The problem for me is that this is less magical than de magic band. And I know that's kinda silly, but it does bothers me when Disney does these "non magical" choices... But I can see the new generations loving this new "gadget"
