I need a little help understanding...there is actually two parks in California and they are side by side? I know that everyone has said the Disneyland is at tops, a 2 day park. Is this counting that it’s two parks or 2 days each?? I’m really just planning on one day there, so...does anyone want to let me know what “half day can’t miss” things I should do at each park?? And can I pull this off??

So......let me see how much help I can be:
Question 1) "There are actually two parks in California and they are side by side?" -------- Yes!!! The entire resort is called Disneyland Resort and it consists of Disneyland and Disney California Adventure Park; similar to the Walt Disney World Resort consists of 4 parks --- MK, Epcot, DHS, and AK. Theoretically, the two parks face each other and are separated by about 100 yards of concrete (see picture below - courtesy of Disneyland Resort)
In this picture, Disneyland Park is at the top and Disney California Adventure Park is at the bottom with the bus parking on the right and Downtown Disney on the left.
Question 2) "I know that everyone has said the Disneyland is at tops, a 2 day park. Is this counting that it’s two parks or 2 days each??" -------- That is difficult to answer because it is based on how that person was taught about the parks. For me and my wife, DLR is the entire resort while DL is Disneyland Park and DCA is Disney California Adventure Park. When my wife and I were there a few years back, we stayed 3 nights at Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel. This was how we used our tickets: Day 1 at DL (whole day), Day 2 at DCA and DL (was able to do DCA from first thing in the morning until 2 - 3 p.m. and then headed across the way to DL), Day 3 jumping back and forth from park to park depending on how the mood struck us.
Question 3) "does anyone want to let me know what “half day can’t miss” things I should do at each park??" -------- To answer this, the first question you have to answer yourself is do you want to see what's different? Do you want to see the entire parks or just your favorites and rides that are different between MK and DL?
Here is a list of attractions / shows that are available at DLR that are NOT available at WDW:
Disneyland Attractions: Disneyland Railroad featuring the Grand Canyon and Primeval World Dioramas (obviously different loop then at MK) Disney Monorail The Disney Gallery Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters (same theme but slightly different than Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin) Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage Matterhorn Bobsleds Alice in Wonderland Storybookland Canal Boats Casey Jr. Circus Train Snow White's Scary Adventures Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Pinocchio's Daring Journey Fantasy Faire and Royal Theater Mickey's Toontown (in general) Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin Golden Horseshoe Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island Sailing Ship Columbia Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes New Orleans Square (in general) Pirates of the Caribbean(same but different so worth seeing again) Haunted Mansion (same but different so worth seeing again) Indiana Jones Adventure
Entertainment: Fantasmic! Together Forever: A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular fireworks Pixar Play Parade Mickey and the Magical Map Royal Theatre Storytelling at Fantasy Faire
Disney California Adventure Attractions: Cars Land (in general) Radiator Springs Racers Mater's Junkyard Jamboree Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout!/Monsters After Dark (same as Tower of Terror but different theme) Buena Vista Street (in general) Red Car Trolley Monsters Inc: Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! Disney Animation (Sorcerer's Workshop) Grizzly River Run Redwood Creek Challenge Trail Incredicoaster Goofy's Sky School Pixar Pal-A-Round Golden Zephyr Silly Symphony Swings Jessie's Critter Carousel (opens 2019)
Entertainment: World of Color Paint the Night Parade Frozen - Live at the Hyperion! Red Car Newsboys Five & Dime
Now.....you have to figure out which attractions you want to you see and only you can answer that question.
For my wife and I, in DL we saw Disneyland Railroad, Disney Monorail, The Disney Gallery, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Alice in Wonderland, Storybookland Canal Boats, Snow White's Scary Adventures, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Pinocchio's Daring Journey, Mickey's Toontown (walked through), Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin, New Orleans Square, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and Indiana Jones Adventure
In DCA, we saw Paradise Pier (now Pixar Pier) and Little Mermaid since CarLand was open and we don't do water raft rides.
Question 3) "And can I pull this off??" -------- It would tight for one day so that being said, I would pick DL and stay there all day. If you wanted to do both parks, then I would do DCA in the morning and leave like around 1:00 p.m. and say what we miss we miss and then head to DL for the rest of the day. When the day is over so is your fun.
Thanks, Doc! We have two day passes with park hopper attached to our South West Chief/Grand Canyon/Los Angeles/Disneyland trip. John is getting three trains and I get Disney. Not a bad trade!
