According to Shannon from MickeyTravels, an all new Disney Vacation Club resort is coming to the Walt Disney World Resort. Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts revealed at the D23 Expo this weekend Disney's Riviera Resort will be located near Epcot and will connect with areas on the Walt Disney World property with a new skyway transportation system.
“We’re thrilled to announce plans for a new Disney Vacation Club property called Disney Riviera Resort coming to Walt Disney World Resort,” Mr. Chapek said. “Our Vacation Club Members are among our most loyal fans, and we think that they will love what we have planned, especially the rooftop restaurant that will offer unbelievable views of nighttime spectaculars at both Epcot and Hollywood Studios.”
Disney Skyliner, the all new gondola transportation system, was announced as well. The gondola system will give guests a whole new view of the Walt Disney Wold property, taking guests soaring through the skies.
The Disney Riviera Resort is estimated to open in Fall 2019 and will be the 15th Disney Vacation Property.

A another DVC resort is coming to the Walt Disney World. There have been multiple reports / rumors over the last couple months about some construction happening around the site of the former River Country. The permits for this construction has been called Project 89.
Blog Mickey reported to that this is no longer a rumor because, according to GrowthSpotter, Disney has decided on two contractors to lead the River Country Hotel project we told you about back in March. International design firm WATG has been chosen to lead the design of the new hotel, with Balfour Beatty winning the bid to serve as the construction manager for the project.
Both of the contractors have a history with The Walt Disney Company. At Walt Disney World, WATG’s most visible project is the Grand Floridian Resort. WATG has also designed hotels at Disney theme parks in Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Balfour Beatty has worked on Pandora – The World of Avatar and is currently the contractor for upcoming Ratatouille attraction at Epcot and the 15-story tower expansion at Coronado Springs Resort.
Back to the River Country construction site, or Project 89 as it appears in permits, the work is expected to cost upwards of $350 million to develop. According to insiders, the hotel will have 1,340 bays, which is an industry term for a standard room size. Of course, there will likely be rooms that take up more than just a standard space, leading the total room count to be lower than the amount of “bays”.
Disney Vacation Club (DVC) is expected to take the majority of the rooms at the new resort, up to 940 of the 1,340 bays. This space will produce roughly 300 rooms for the DVC timeshare program.
As far as permitting is concerned, Disney recently filed a permit to create an off-site stockpile area earlier this month. As of publish time, Disney hasn’t completed this off-site area. A timeline for the new hotel wasn’t given, but construction is said to start after the completion of the Immersive Star Wars Resort near Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which is seeing land clearing ongoing right now.
not entirely thrilled it will be a vacation club resort, but nice to know they are doing something with this closed park. Would have liked something different for everyone to enjoy.
We were only fortunate to enjoy River Country and Treasure Island once during our many trips to WDW. It was some time before we found out they closed both, one for health reasons (river country) and because they moved all the animals to Animal Kingdom (Treasure Island).
I believe it was called Treasure Island but maybe it was called something else, anyone know the correct name?

From what I understand this is not like the Riviera that is being built near the Caribbean Beach resort (exclusively DVC).
Instead, think of this more like the Boardwalk resort, something built from the start as a full Hotel and DVC combo...400 Hotel rooms and 300 DVC rooms. Hopefully like the Boardwalk they bring out the best of both accommodation types.
I (like pvtim) have found more information about this new resort.
DVCNews has post a couple of articles about his resort:
One article quotes the website GrowthSpotter.com has publised new details on Disney's "Project 89", a new resort adjacent to Disney's Ft. Wilderness Resort & Campgrounds. Citing its own industry sources, GrowthSpotter claims that the property will reportedly feature 1340 "bays", of which 940 are reserved for Disney Vacation Club villas. A "bay" is a slot in the superstructure about the size and dimensions of a hotel room.
The typical Two Bedroom DVC villa runs about 900-1000 sq ft and consists of three bays: one for the master bedroom, one for the kitchen and living space and the third for the Studio room or guest bedroom. Many Two Bedroom villas are configured as "lockoffs," meaning that the master bedroom + living space can be reserved as a One Bedroom villa while the second bedroom stands independently as a Deluxe Studio villa. The two rooms can also be booked together as a "lockoff Two Bedroom villa."
Three Bedroom Grand Villas can occupy six bays--often spread over two floors--running in the neighborhood of 2000 sq ft.
The remaining 400 bays would presumably be earmarked for hotel rooms.
The another article shows how the schematic drawing from the first rendering of this project back 2011 laid over the land of the old River Country.

I also found a website called DVC Info that shows the original schematic drawings from 2011 and a video of the resort.
Like always Doc, you do an amazing job giving us updates and information. It looks great, not sure if it has anything to do with being away from the Happiest Place on Earth for so long or not.
