On September 29, 2019, the Disney Skyliner had its grand opening and over the (October 5, 2019), the new transportation system had to be shut down due to its first accident. Luckily, no guests were involved in the crash, which occurred within the Riviera Resort station, but some guests were stranded for up to 3 hours while the Reedy Creek Fire Department performed emergency evacuation procedures.
According to Blog Mickey, "Reports began to surface shortly before 8pm that there was an incident at the Riviera Resort station and that the Disney Skyliner gondola system had stopped. It took Disney hours to get all of the guests off of the system.
A Disney spokesperson reached out and said that an “empty car was delayed, a second empty car bumped it. No Guests were involved”."

By the very early morning of Saturday, October 6th, all guests have been evacuated from all Disney Skyliner gondola cabins and Doppelmayr is on site to assist. Doppelmayr is the company that built the Disney Skyliner gondola system. Disney was able to take the Disney Skyliner gondola cabin in question off of the line and continue movement to let most guests exit from the stations.
Here is Disney's official statement on the incident:
“We have a team diligently looking into the cause of the malfunction on the Epcot line of the Disney Skyliner. We have been in contact with the guests, many of whom were on the Skyliner for more than three hours until we were able to restart the system. We express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and continue to work with each guest individually.”
Disney is regarding the accident a “malfunction” of the Epcot line, and the Disney Skyliner has yet to reopen and will remain closed until further notice.
"We know many of you have been looking for an update on Disney Skyliner and are glad to share that it has reopened to guests today. Following a complete review with the manufacturer, we’ve made adjustments to our processes and training, and we are improving how we communicate with guests during their flight with Disney Skyliner. We again offer our deepest apologies to the guests impacted by the malfunction that resulted in extended operating delays on Oct. 5.
Beginning today, guests may travel aboard Disney Skyliner from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. However, system updates later this week will result in the following modified operating hours for Oct. 16-18:
Oct. 16: The Disney Hollywood Studios line will be closed while the other two lines will be available from 1 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Oct. 17-18: All lines will be open from 1 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Similar to ski lift systems, Disney Skyliner may slow or come to some stops during the ride, particularly when we need to accommodate guests who require additional time to load their cabin. We want to assure you that the comfort of every guest is important to us."
